Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training Minister Joanne Croffordannounced today that information on Student Financial Assistance is
now available through the Department's toll-free Career Information
Hot Line. The telephone number is 1-800-597-8278.
The Saskatchewan Student Loans Program was significantly improved in
this year's budget. The Budget reallocated $22 million to establish a
Saskatchewan Student Bursary Program for students with high need,
increased financial assistance for students with dependants and
brought in tax relief for student loans in repayment. This tax relief
will save students $5 million in provincial income tax. These
improvements were made after the Student Assistance Task Group
reported that students' need adequate financial support without higher
debts, as well as help in repaying their debts.
"We are investing in young people by addressing the needs of
students," Crofford said. "More students will get more financial
assistance with considerably less debt and they will get tax help when
repaying their debt."
The new provincial bursary program and increased assistance levels
will allow students with dependants to return to school. Students
with dependants will no longer have to borrow more than other students
to provide for their children while attending a post-secondary
institution.
Students may be eligible for the maximum bursary of $3,230 over a
regular school term. As well, students with dependants may be
eligible for a bursary up to $4,250. The amounts will vary
depending on financial need and on the length of the study
period. Student Financial Assistance in the form of a bursary
does not have to be repaid. The Saskatchewan Student Bursary
Program is a significant factor in controlling debt for high
needs students.
