LA LOCHE HEALTH FACILITY APPROVAL ANNOUNCED

Released on July 2, 1998

Health Minister Clay Serby and Northern Affairs Minister Keith Goulet

today announced approval-in-principle for a new health facility in

La Loche.

The health facility, which will be a replacement for the currently

used St. Martin's Hospital, will offer acute care, long term care, and

community based health services. In-patient detoxification services

will also be available.

"We are investing in quality health services in Saskatchewan," Serby

said. "The provincial contribution for the La Loche project will be

determined once agreements are finalized between Keewatin Yathe'

Health District and Saskatchewan Health."

Planning for the new facility began in 1997 and has included input

from community residents, health workers and other interested

stakeholders.

"Our support for the La Loche facility is another example of our

commitment to the people of northern Saskatchewan," Goulet added.

"A new facility in La Loche will help ensure the health needs of

northern residents are met into the future."

This year's capital budget is $44.9 million, including spending

on previously announced and newly approved projects.

The new La Loche health facility is the third major health

project undertaken in the north recently. The La Ronge Health

Centre was officially opened in 1996 and a new health facility

near Stony Rapids, which will serve the Athabasca region, is in

the planning stages.
