INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS FUNDING APPROVED FOR FRANCOPHONE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Released on January 26, 1998

Ron J. Duhamel, Secretary of State for Western Economic

Diversification and minister responsible for implementation of the

infrastructure program in Western Canada and Carol Teichrob, Minister

of Municipal Government today announced $110,000 in funding for the

Centre scolaire communitaire de Regina under Phase One of the

Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program.

The funding will be used to complete a second building phase of the

centre, including an expanded parking area and the installation of an

elevator to provide access for people with disabilities.

"This announcement demonstrates the infrastructure program is as much

about strengthening our social fabric and enhancing the quality of

life for Saskatchewan residents as it is about maintaining roads and

creating jobs," Duhamel said. "This facility will provide an

important and needed gathering place for Francophone people and

associations in Regina."

"Infrastructure funding is an investment in people and communities,"

said Teichrob, minister responsible for the Canada - Saskatchewan

Infrastructure Agreement.

"We are pleased that this funding will contribute to a facility that

will support the cultural activities of the Francophone community of

Saskatchewan."

The $1.3 million Centre scolaire communitaire de Regina is an addition

to the Monseigneur de Laval Francophone School. The centre includes a

community hall, the kitchen and food preparation area and office space

for Francophone associations and school board.

The original Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program, signed

in January 1994, is estimated to have created more than 5,200

short-term jobs, while at the same time making essential improvements

to infrastructure throughout the province.

Federal funding for this initiative was provided for in the February

1997 budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.

These projects underline the commitment of both governments to

establish spending priorities that will best serve the people of

Saskatchewan through efficient use of their tax dollars.
