CASINO FUNDS TO HELP YORKTON CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Released on January 16, 1998

Health Minister Clay Serby, on behalf of Municipal Government Minister

Carol Teichrob, today announced that four Yorkton community

organizations will receive $20,800 in casino profits through the

Associated Entities Fund.

The Yorkton Big Brothers and Sisters Association will receive $2,800

for a mentorship program. The Yorkton Child Action Committee will

receive two grants of $5,000 each for a community kitchen project and

production of a video about driving safely on grid roads. The Yorkton

Child Action Committee, in partnership with the Society for the

Involvement of Good Neighbours (SIGN), will receive $5,000 for a

pre-school playground program. Metis Women of Yorkton will receive

$3,000 to establish a mothers' support group.

"The province established the Associated Entities Fund to distribute a

portion of casino profits for the benefit of Saskatchewan people,"

Serby said. "These projects will support children, youth and families

in our community."

The Yorkton Big Brothers/Sisters' mentorship program will match

children age six to 12 with a supportive adult, to build the child's

self-esteem and confidence.

The Yorkton Child Action Committee community kitchen project will

run once a week in four different locations and will teach

participants how to prepare low cost, nutritious meals and how to

budget money.

Production of a video about safe driving on grid roads will be

used to teach young drivers and reduce the number of grid road

accidents in Saskatchewan.

SIGN's preschool playground program will provide a safe,

stimulating environment for preschoolers to play. Programs

include reading circles, a toy lending library and parenting

support and education.

The mothers' support group being established by the Metis Women

of Yorkton will provide participants an opportunity to talk about

parenting issues and establish a network of support.

The Associated Entities Fund receives a portion of the profits

from Casino Regina; the Gold Eagle Casino, North Battleford; the

Northern Lights Casino, Prince Albert; the Painted Hand Casino,

Yorkton.

Serby said the Associated Entities Fund provides grants to

community organizations for programs and services that support

children, youth and families.
