SASKATCHEWAN FILM TAX CREDIT HELPING INDUSTRY THRIVE

Released on August 31, 1998

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today

praised the Saskatchewan film and video industry for its efforts to

attract new productions and new jobs to the province. The minister

was visiting a Radville-area location of another major Saskatchewan

production, Revenge of the Land, based on the book by Saskatchewan

author Maggie Siggins.

"I am pleased to see that the Film Employment Tax Credit introduced in

the last budget is helping the sector grow," MacKinnon said. "We

believe the credit has been a key factor in the additional activity in

the industry this year and will be a major stimulus for more

production and more jobs in the future."

Revenge of the Land is a $12.4 million four-hour miniseries.

Saskatchewan Executive Producer Gerry Sperling of Regina's Four Square

Productions says the tax credit is important for Saskatchewan film and

video companies. "Our tax credit is as good as, if not better than

other provinces," Sperling said. "It has resulted in an explosion of

new production this summer. Combined with our high-quality crews and

our great locations, the tax credit has made it very attractive for

major projects to come to Saskatchewan."

More than 150 cast and crew people from Saskatchewan are working

on Revenge of the Land on various locations throughout the

province.

Stephen Hall is a director-trainee on Revenge of the Land. He

credits the tax incentive for creating more work for Saskatchewan

crews. "Without the tax credit, I doubt the my job on this

project would have happened," Hall said.

When the production is finished, it will be shown on CBC

television in Canada and on CBS in the United States. "I am very

excited that the Saskatchewan film and video community is able to

tell our stories to the world while providing high-quality,

exciting jobs for Saskatchewan people," MacKinnon said.
