$1.8 MILLION ANNOUNCED FOR RENTAL MARKET HOUSING IN THE NORTH

Released on August 11, 1998

Municipal Government Minister Carol Teichrob and Northern Affairs

Minister Keith Goulet today announced that an additional 42 market

rental housing units will be built in the communities of La Ronge,

Air Ronge, Buffalo Narrows, Ile a La Crosse, La Loche and Pinehouse

under the 1998 Rental Market Assistance Program.

"More than $1.8 million in grants has been awarded to assist seven

private and non-profit developers who submitted successful proposals

to construct and manage rental market housing in northern

Saskatchewan," Teichrob said. "In most communities in the north,

private market rental housing is limited or non-existent. The Rental

Market Assistance Program continues to strengthen communities and is

highly successful in promoting a wider choice of suitable housing

options in northern Saskatchewan."

"These grants will generate more than $3 million in new construction

in northern Saskatchewan and create 49 jobs during the construction

period," Goulet said.

The 1998 grants bring the total number of market rental housing units

developed to 69. The 1998 commitment represents almost double the

number of units that were committed in 1997. The Rental Market

Assistance Program encourages communities and local developers to work

with government to identify and provide appropriate solutions for

housing in northern Saskatchewan.

The Program provides grants of up to 75 per cent of construction

costs with the developer responsible for the remaining

25 per cent. The maximum grant is $45,000 per unit. Developers

are responsible for all ongoing costs associated with the new

units.

The Rental Market Assistance Program was announced in the 1997-98

budget and is part of an $8 million commitment over three years

to fund housing programs in northern communities.
