MAJOR RENOVATION TO BRUNSKILL SCHOOL ANNOUNCED

Released on April 27, 1998

Education Minister Pat Atkinson today announced approval for an

addition and renovation to Brunskill Elementary School to address

space shortages in the school and help meet the long-term facility

needs for students in the Saskatoon Public School Division.

"Today's announcement demonstrates our government's commitment to

securing the future of the province by investing, together with our

partners, in the public education of Saskatchewan's students,"

Atkinson said.

The project is expected to cost $4.5 million which will be shared

almost equally by the provincial government and the school division.

This year the province will fund planning and design work to determine

the scope and detailed costs of the project. Project construction

will be funded over the next two years. Construction is expected to

begin in the spring of 1999.

"Over the past few years this vibrant community has outgrown the

current space in the Brunskill Elementary School," Atkinson said.

There are currently significant space shortages for classrooms and

special program areas like science and computer labs and resource

rooms. The gymnasium is also smaller than the school facilities

guidelines recommend. Brunskill School was built in two phases during

the 1950's.

"This is really fulfilling our commitment to work with our

partners in education to provide Saskatoon students with a safe

and well-equipped learning environment," Atkinson said. "Anytime

we substantially improve school facilities in a community, it is

an exciting time. Today's announcement is of importance to all

education partners here in this community."

This year's total provincial capital budget for new school

construction and renovation is $24 million, an increase of

$7.3 million over last year's capital budget.
