MAJOR RENOVATION TO WESTVIEW SCHOOL ANNOUNCED

Released on April 23, 1998

Education Minister Pat Atkinson today announced approval for an

addition and renovation to Westview Elementary School in Estevan to

accommodate grade 7 and 8 students from the southwest area of the

city. The Province will contribute $2 million toward the total

anticipated project cost of $3 million.

"Today's approval in principle demonstrates our government's

commitment to securing the future of the province by investing,

together with our partners, in the public education of Saskatchewan's

children and youth," Atkinson said.

"The addition and renovations are required to meet the long-term

facility needs for students in the Estevan Public School Division."

This year the province will fund planning and design work to determine

the scope and detailed costs of the project. Funding for project

construction will come in the 1999-2000 Provincial Budget.

Construction will begin in early 1999.

This project is the third phase of an integrated facility plan for

efficient use of educational facilities in the Estevan Public, Estevan

Roman Catholic Separate School Division (RCSSD) and Estevan Rural

school divisions. In 1995 and 1996, the Province funded $2.3 million

in renovations at Pleasantdale Elementary School.

To date there has been a total of $2.8 million in government

funding for improvements at the Estevan Comprehensive High School

and the joint use project to accommodate the inclusion of

Southeast Regional College in the same facility.

The long-term plan includes renovations at Hillside and Hillcrest

elementary schools and the closure of Estevan Junior High in the

Estevan Public School Division. Future projects in the Estevan

Rural School Division and Estevan RCSSD are also included in the

plan.

"This is really about coming through on our commitment to provide

Estevan students with a safe and well-equipped learning

environment," Atkinson said. "Anytime we substantially improve

school facilities in a community, it is an exciting time for that

community. Today's announcement is of importance to all our

education partners here in Estevan."

This year's total provincial capital budget for new school

construction and renovation is $24 million, an increase of

$7.3 million over last year's capital budget.
