MAJOR ADDITION TO VANIER COLLEGIATE ANNOUNCED

Released on April 9, 1998

Education Minister Pat Atkinson today announced approval of a major

addition to Vanier Collegiate in Moose Jaw to replace the old section

of the school built in 1914. The addition will meet the long-term

facility needs for students in the Moose Jaw Roman Catholic Separate

School Division.

"Today's announcement demonstrates we are committed to working with

our partners in education to provide Saskatchewan students with a safe

learning environment," Atkinson said.

"Last year the government contributed almost $1.4 million to replace

the roof and address health and safety concerns in the newer section

of the school built in 1971. This year the government will provide

$1.75 million for the addition. Funds will be provided in 1999-2000

to complete the funding of the addition."

Fifteen classrooms and administrative space will be constructed to

replace space lost with the closure of the old portion of the school.

A sprinkler and fire alarm system will also be installed in the

recently upgraded section of the school.

"This is a great day for students, teachers and parents from this

education community," Atkinson said. "While the old school has

served you well, when these renovations are complete, Vanier

Collegiate will once again be a warm and inviting educational

facility you can be proud of.

"This is really about improving the quality of education for

students. Anytime we substantially improve school facilities in

a community, it is an exciting time for that community. Today's

announcement is of importance to all education partners here in

Moose Jaw."

This year's total provincial capital budget for new school

construction and renovation is $24 million, an increase of

$7.3 million over last year's capital budget. A number of other

major projects and more than 100 school improvement projects will

also be approved over the next year in communities across the

province.
