DISCOVER SASKATCHEWAN SERIES PROVIDES INFORMATION ABOUT HISTORIC SITES

Released on April 8, 1998

Municipal Government Minister Carol Teichrob today launched A Guide to

Historic Sites, the first book of a new Discover Saskatchewan series.

The new publication series is the result of a partnership between

Saskatchewan Municipal Government, University of Regina, Canadian

Plains Research Center, Tourism Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan

Heritage Foundation.

The Guide to Historic Sites will include all Provincial Historic

Parks, Provincial Heritage Property, Federal Heritage Sites and

Provincial Historic Markers, as well as a large selection of

Saskatchewan's museums, non-governmental heritage plaques and

municipal heritage properties.

"The series will meet an important need to provide print resources to

residents as well as individuals from outside the province interested

in sharing our rich and diverse environment," Teichrob said. "We are

pleased to be part of this important project through the department's

Heritage Branch."

"Saskatchewan residents and visitors, interested in local history will

want to read this book, study the extensive assortment of maps and

photographs and carry it with them as a travelling resource,"

Dr. Ralph Nilson, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Activity Studies of

the University of Regina, said.

"We are proud to have published this book which will be of

interest to school groups and travellers," Brian Mlazgar,

publications co-ordinator of the Canadian Plains Research Center,

said. "The information and locations identified in the book will

make anyone's trip through the province more enjoyable."

"Our province's fascinating and diverse history is an important

element of its appeal as a destination," Tourism Saskatchewan

President and Chief Executive Officer Randy Williams said. "We

look forward to the development of the remainder of the Discover

Saskatchewan series, which will complement the comprehensive

travel literature we can offer people who call our office and

visitors to Saskatchewan."

"We look for opportunities to work with other agencies and

organizations in the promotion of our province's rich heritage,"

Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation Chairman Bill Hutchinson said.

"We are pleased and proud to be part of this important project."
