Health Minister Clay Serby, on behalf of Social Services MinisterLorne Calvert, today announced $17,300 in one-time Child Nutrition and
Development funding to support a new Community Kitchen project in
Yorkton.
The funding will be used to support the development of Community
Kitchen projects in the Canadian Mental Health Drop-In Centre, the
Yorkton Friendship Centre and up to two additional locations yet to be
identified.
"These are very important programs because not only do they provide
meals for vulnerable families and children, but they also assist
individuals in developing meal planning, budgeting and food
preparation skills," Serby said.
The Kitchens will:
enhance participants' knowledge of cooking low-cost nutritious
meals;
enable participants to share recipes and meal planning tips;
involve participants in program planning; and
encourage community support for, and equipment and food donations
to, the programs.
"As community members we all have a role to play in assisting
vulnerable individuals and families to become independent and
self-sufficient," Serby said. "I want to commend the community
organizations involved in developing and supporting these
projects."
The Child Nutrition and Development Program provides support to
school divisions and community-based organizations across the
province. Each year more than one million meals are provided to
vulnerable children and families through these projects.
In 1997/98 ongoing funding for these programs was increased by
$200,000 to $1.2 million.
