183 PROJECTS APPROVED FOR INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS FUNDING IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on September 23, 1997

Natural Resources Minister Ralph Goodale and Saskatchewan Municipal

Government Minister Carol Teichrob today announced that the

Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program has approved funding

for 183 municipal projects in Saskatchewan.

Speaking on behalf of Ron J. Duhamel, Secretary of State for Western

Economic Diversification and minister responsible for implementation

of the infrastructure program in Western Canada, Goodale said:

"Important infrastructure improvements like upgrading the water

treatment plant in Spalding or upgrading the streets in Melville make

communities more attractive for development purposes, while creating

jobs and improving the quality of life for Saskatchewan residents."

"Infrastructure spending is building a strong foundation for continued

economic growth in the province," Teichrob, minister responsible for

the Canada-Saskatchewan infrastructure agreement, said. "It directly

creates jobs in construction projects and new opportunities for

Saskatchewan people employed in the manufacturing and service sectors

while improving our quality of life and our economic competitiveness."

The projects, totalling $10 million, will be funded by the three

levels of government - federal, provincial and municipal. They

include construction of new roads, expansion and replacement of water

and sewer plants, as well as improvements to fire halls and

recreational and cultural facilities.

These infrastructure projects are expected to create 167 jobs in

Saskatchewan during the planning and construction phases. In support

of these projects, the province allocated its share of more than

$1.7 million in the 1997/98 budget.

The original Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program, signed

in January 1994, is estimated to have created more than 5,200

short-term jobs, while at the same time making essential improvements

to infrastructure throughout the province.

Phase Two of the Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program

provides for $34 million in additional new investments in Saskatchewan

Infrastructure. To date, 672 projects have been approved, totalling

$39.7 million.

Federal funding for this initiative was provided for in the February

1997 budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.

These projects underline the commitment of both governments to

establish spending priorities that will best serve the people of

Saskatchewan through efficient use of their tax dollars.
