Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon, also
minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Opportunities Corporation
(SOCO), announced today that SOCO is making a $1 million equity
investment in SCI-TEC Instruments Inc. of Saskatoon.
"Innovation is a key ingredient to economic success in the new
information economy. SOCO is targeting innovative technology
companies such as SCI-TEC for investment because they will create
wealth and jobs," MacKinnon said at the grand opening of the company's
new manufacturing facility today. "This expansion demonstrates that
SCI-TEC has developed an effective strategy for growth, and will make
an important contribution to the economic development of our
province."
SOCO's investment will assist the company in its strategy to increase
sales from $10.8 million in 1996 to $100 million in the year 2000.
The company expects that 50 per cent of the growth will come from
current products and new developments, and the other 50 per cent will
be generated by acquisitions and mergers.
SCI-TEC was incorporated in 1981 and employs 40 people in
Saskatoon. The company expects to create about 10 new jobs in the
next two years. Most of the positions will require advanced
technical skills and a scientific background.
SCI-TEC manufactures advanced equipment used in environmental
monitoring. One of its products, the Brewer Ozone
Spectrophotometer, was instrumental in the discovery of the
thinning of the ozone layer. The Brewer has been installed at
140 sites on seven continents and operates in a niche market with
virtually no competition.
SOCO has a mandate to facilitate economic growth through
investment in viable businesses and in infrastructure which
supports the development of business. It has invested more than
$19 million in Saskatchewan businesses since its creation in
1994. Its investments have contributed to the creation of 377
full-time jobs, 49 part-time jobs and 412 temporary jobs, and
have helped maintain another 440 jobs. It also owns and operates
Innovation Place, a world-recognized research and development
park in Saskatoon.
