$630,000 ANNOUNCED FOR CONSTRUCTION OF RENTAL HOUSING IN THE NORTH

Released on October 28, 1997

Municipal Government Minister Carol Teichrob today announced that 14

rental housing units will be built in La Ronge and Buffalo Narrows under

the 1997-98 Rental Market Assistance Program. $630,000 in grants have

been awarded to Tison Properties Inc. of La Ronge and Izzy Contracting

Ltd. of Buffalo Narrows.

"Private market rental housing is limited or non-existent in most

communities in the north," Teichrob said. "The provincial government is

investing in people and northern communities by providing assistance to

developers to build rental housing."

"These grants will generate more than $1 million in construction

activity in northern Saskatchewan and create 20 jobs during the three

month construction period," Northern Affairs Minister Keith Goulet said.

In the spring of 1997, eligible developers were invited to submit

construction proposals. Two proposals have been approved and two others

will receive pre-development funding.

Tison Properties Inc. has been awarded a grant of $450,000 for the

construction of 10 rental units in La Ronge. Total value of the project

is estimated at $853,000. Izzy Contracting Ltd. has been awarded a

grant of $180,000 for construction of four rental units in Buffalo

Narrows at a total project cost of $248,000.

Henry and Allison Brown and Boulanger Enterprises Ltd. will

receive grants of $2,500 and $2,000 respectively to further

develop proposals for construction of nine rental units in Air

Ronge.

The Rental Market Assistance Program was announced in the 1997-98

budget and is part of an $8 million commitment over three years

to fund housing programs in northern communities. The program

assists private and non-profit developers to construct rental

housing units in northern Saskatchewan.

Teichrob said the program encourages communities and local

developers to work with government to identify and provide

appropriate solutions for housing in northern Saskatchewan.
