MACKINNON TELLS MINNESOTA BUSINESS EXECS ABOUT SASKATCHEWAN MODEL

Released on October 22, 1997

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon

described Saskatchewan's business opportunities and potential to

Minnesota business leaders at a luncheon of the Canada-Minnesota

Business Council today in Minneapolis.

"Saskatchewan led the way in growth in Canada last year and this year

has been one of record-breaking employment and continued growth in

investment and exports," MacKinnon told the group. "There has been

increasing confidence by the business community as a result of our

strong performance and the provincial government's action in being the

first in Canada to balance our budget."

MacKinnon also shared some of Saskatchewan's innovative approaches to

working with the business community to improve economic performance.

"The Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership is the first industry

government partnership in the country devoted to increasing our

exports," she said. "And in partnership with business people, we

initiated a review of our economy to identify our competitive

strengths and weaknesses."

The minister noted that Saskatchewan's business location costs are 12

per cent lower than comparable U.S. locations and are particularly

favourable to agbiotech, pork processing, agriculture equipment

manufacturing and call centre operations.

"The provincial government remains committed to improving our

economy through investing in training for our young people,

sustainable tax reductions and continued investment in our

education and health system," MacKinnon said. "Competitiveness

in the new economy requires that we take a holistic approach to

developing the future of our province.

"We believe we can continue to build a modern, prosperous and

co-operative society with balance, fairness and responsible

financial management as a model for the 21st century."

MacKinnon was speaking as a result of an invitation by the

Canada-Minnesota Business Council and while in Minneapolis will

also be meeting with Multi-Foods, a multi-national food

processing company located there. This is a preliminary meeting

intended to explore potential opportunities for future investment

and job creation in Saskatchewan.
