61 PROJECTS APPROVED FOR INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS FUNDING IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on October 14, 1997

Natural Resources Minister Ralph Goodale and Saskatchewan Municipal

Government Minister Carol Teichrob today announced that the

Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program has approved a water

and sewer project for two communities in northern Saskatchewan under

Phase One of the program and 60 new municipal projects under Phase

Two.

Speaking on behalf of Ron J. Duhamel, Secretary of State for Western

Economic Diversification and minister responsible for implementation

of the infrastructure program in Western Canada, Minister Goodale

said: "The infrastructure program is an excellent example of how the

three levels of government can pool their resources to work to fulfill

the needs of Canadians and build a better country, whether it be on

water and sewer projects in northern Saskatchewan or road repairs in

southern Saskatchewan."

"Infrastructure projects like these enhance our quality of life and

make municipalities more competitive in attracting new residents and

economic development in the future," Teichrob, minister responsible

for the Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Agreement said. "The program creates employment opportunities for Saskatchewan

people now, and communities have benefited with newly paved

streets, more efficient roadways, water treatment of sewage

facilities and renovated recreational facilities."

The northern water and sewer project for Air Ronge and Pelican

Narrows will cost $658,000 and will be funded by the three levels

of government under the original program. The 60 municipal

projects, totalling $5.1 million, will be funded under Phase Two.

These projects include bridge construction, municipal road

construction, new storm sewer systems and sewage lagoon

improvements.

To date, 732 projects have been approved under Phase Two of the

program, totalling $44.97 million and creating an estimated 750

short-term jobs.

The original Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program,

signed in January 1994, is estimated to have created more than

5,200 short-term jobs, while at the same time making essential

improvements to infrastructure throughout the province.

Federal funding for this initiative was provided for in the

February 1997 budget and is therefore built into the existing

fiscal framework. These projects underline the commitment of

both governments to establish spending priorities that will best

serve the people of Saskatchewan through efficient use of their

tax dollars.
