Finance Minister Eric Cline announced that the government will beconsulting widely with Saskatchewan people in preparation for the
1998-99 provincial budget. The pre-budget consultation begins with
Cline attending meetings today in Unity and Battleford.
Based on a consultation discussion paper called Investing in People:
Progress and Prospects for a Strong Saskatchewan, the consultation
process gives people a chance to provide ideas and suggestions for the
spring budget.
"We want to show Saskatchewan people how far we have come as a
province in the 1990's," Cline said. "We can't do everything we want
to yet, but the financial and economic trends are positive, and that
means we should be investing carefully today in areas where we will
see the greatest overall benefit in the future.
"Investing in jobs, highways, health care, education and services for
children and families are this government's key priorities in the year
ahead. Sound financial management has allowed us to make progress in
these areas. Now is the time to look at where we can do even better."
Cline noted that the government's balanced approach to investing in
services, lowering taxes and paying down debt supports compassionate
social programs, cooperative decision making, community solutions and
greater opportunities for all Saskatchewan people.
The discussion paper shows that the province's fiscal capacity is
still limited by a large debt and high interest payments. In
spite of these constraints, Cline said, "Saskatchewan people have
good reason to be optimistic because their government is
committed to working with them to achieve common goals. What is
important is that we keep working together to make sure we get
the greatest overall benefit from our limited resources."
The paper also includes a short survey that can be filled out and
returned. Comments can also be forwarded by e-mail to
