GOVERNMENT PROVIDES FUNDS FOR CHILD CARE CENTRE EXPANSION

Released on November 20, 1997

Social Services Minister Lorne Calvert today recognized National Child

Day by presenting cheques to two child care centres in Prince Albert.

Funding was provided to the South Hill Child Care Centre and the Play

and Learn Day Care to assist with renovations in the day care

facilities.

"I am very pleased to be here on such an important day as part of

government's ongoing commitment to ensuring quality care for

Saskatchewan children," Calvert said.

Both centres will receive funding for the addition of windows to the

centres to ensure they meet natural lighting requirements. The Play

and Learn Day Care will also receive funding to expand its kitchen

facilities for a hot lunch program.

The Play and Learn Day Care will receive $25,000 and the South Hill

Child Care Centre will receive $9,763.38.

"As a government we are working to ensure Saskatchewan children grow

up in healthy, safe environments," Calvert said. "I am very pleased

that we have been able to work in partnership with the Play and Learn

and South Hill child care centres to enhance conditions in these

facilities for Prince Albert children."

The funding is part of the $1 million in Child Care Capital

Grants announced in the 1997/98 budget. The Capital Grant funds

are being made available to child care centres for renovating and

for upgrading equipment to enhance the safety and quality of

child care in Saskatchewan.

The Child Care Capital Grants were introduced for the 1997/98

fiscal year through Saskatchewan's Action Plan for Children.

In 1997/98 more than $24.7 million was targeted to programs for

children and families under the Action Plan.

"Our children are our future," Calvert said. "We all need to

play a role in developing a safe supporting environment. I want

to commend the Play and Learn and South Hill Child Care centres'

boards and staff for their commitment to providing a safe and

healthy environment for children."
