YORKTON TO HOST 2000 SASKATCHEWAN SUMMER GAMES

Released on November 12, 1997

Health Minister Clay Serby, on behalf of Municipal Government Minister

Carol Teichrob, today announced that Yorkton has been chosen as the

site of the 2000 Saskatchewan Summer Games.

The games will be held July 23 - 29, 2000 and are expected to attract

more than 2,000 athletes, coaches, managers and officials from across

the province.

"Yorkton has hosted a number of provincial, national and international

events from curling to country music and hockey to student leadership

conferences," Serby said. "Yorkton will undertake a number of capital

improvements including a new athletic field, baseball diamond and

major improvements to a number of sport venues. The community is

enthusiastic, with strong support from council and the business

community and more than 1,700 volunteers who will work at the games."

Serby said the Saskatchewan Games Program operates on a four-year

cycle, alternating every second year between winter and summer games.

Saskatchewan athletes will compete in 14 different sports including

two Special Olympic events. Each of the eight sport zones in

Saskatchewan hold playdowns to select their teams for participation in

the games.

A site evaluation committee of the Saskatchewan Games Council

recommended the selection of Yorkton to host the games. Games

council membership includes Sask Sport Inc., the Saskatchewan

High Schools Athletic Association, zone sport councils,

Saskatchewan Municipal Government, and others who represent the

broader sport community in Saskatchewan.

The council is a permanent regulatory body whose responsibilities

also include rules of competitor eligibility, number of athletes

and officials per sport and games facility standards.

Funding for the games is provided by the Saskatchewan Games

Council, through the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund, corporate

sponsors, the host community and souvenir sales.
