SASKATCHEWAN RESEARCH COUNCIL AND UNIVERSITY SIGN AGREEMENT

Released on May 26, 1997

Municipal Government Minister Carol Teichrob on behalf of Eldon

Lautermilch, minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Research Council

(SRC), today announced that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has

been signed between SRC and the University of Saskatchewan.

Teichrob said the first initiative under this MOU will be SRC/U of S

joint professorships, one in the area of Fermentation and the second in

Pipeline Technology; both are in the College of Engineering.

Under the agreement, the university and SRC will share the cost of the

Fermentation and Pipeline Technology professorships in engineering.

SRC's Pipeline Technology Centre and Fermentation Technologies Branches

and the U of S also intend to work together in several ways including,

joint use of the SRC laboratory facilities that will provide access to

the U of S faculty and students working on joint projects; joint access

to both the U of S and SRC libraries; adjunct professor status for some

SRC senior staff who will be used to provide advice to graduate

students and university research programs; and joint research projects

with the resource and biotechnology industries and provincial and

federal governments.

SRC has worked with the U of S for many years in research and

development involving numerous technologies which have resulted in

centres of excellence and international recognition. These MOU's will

formalize the partnership between SRC and the U of S to form a National

Pipeline Technology Centre and to run a joint program in biotechnology

in Saskatoon.

"Strategic partnerships such as this benefit everyone involved and help

to ensure a prosperous future for Saskatchewan," Teichrob said.

These links between SRC and the university are expected to result in

more initiatives and in cost effective and collective solutions, making

the best use of trained and skilled expertise, and state of the art

facilities.

SRC is a major research and development organization in Saskatchewan.

It provides contract research, technology transfer and analytical

services to companies in the province and around the world.
