Health Minister Eric Cline said today that improving emergency healthservices is a priority for health spending. Two million dollars in
one-time funding will be provided to health districts immediately to
help implement a new communication system, while an additional $3
million will strengthen emergency health services through training and
service improvements.
Leading-edge 800mgHz radio/telecommunication technology will become the
provincial standard for emergency health services, and $2 million will
be provided to health districts for the purchase of this equipment.
Cline said the improved communication technology will connect staff in
hospitals, health centres and special care homes as well as ambulance
workers and first responders. "This technology will allow emergency
personnel to reach the right people with the appropriate skills to help
people in critical need."
In addition to the funds earmarked for new communications technology,
funding for emergency health services in the 1997/98 budget will grow
by $3 million. This funding will provide additional emergency training
for staff and allow districts to enhance services.
