GOVERNMENT IMPROVES K-12 EDUCATION

Released on March 24, 1997

Education Minister Pat Atkinson said todayþs provincial budget builds
on Saskatchewanþs quality K-12 education system with increases to both
provincial operating and capital grants to schools.

Atkinson said school operating grants will increase from $355.2 million
in 1996-97 to $363.2 million in 1997-98, and will further increase to
$369 million in 1998-99.

She said the government will also provide $16.9 million in capital
grants to build and renovate schools. "This is a $5 million increase
in this priority area," Atkinson said.

"Investment in quality education and our young people is an investment
in our future," Atkinson said. "The investment in this budget supports
the good work of our teachers and ensures that all Saskatchewan
students receive the skills and knowledge they need to be productive
citizens in our growing province."
