ENHANCED HEALTH SERVICES TO NORTHERN RESIDENTS

Released on March 24, 1997

Health Minister Eric Cline today announced increased funding for health
services in northern Saskatchewan.

"We are improving the delivery of health care for our residents in the
north," Cline said. "Northern residents will have improved access to
enhanced mental health, physician, home care and public health
services."

Northern Health Services Branch funding for 1997/98 will grow to $12.16
million, a 7.3 per cent increase over the amount in the 1996/97 budget.

New initiatives include:

$1.085M to enhance physician services:

Integration of the La Ronge Physician Group into Northern Medical
Services to help maintain physician services in La Ronge.
Northern Medical Services is a division of the Department of
Family Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, and has been
successful in recruiting physicians to the north.

Increased funding to Northern Medical Services to help maintain
physician services to Ile a la Crosse and Uranium City.

$210,000 to improve access to mental health services:

Additional Mental Health Social Workers in Buffalo Narrows and
Uranium City;

Adolescent Suicide Prevention Worker in La Ronge; and

Community Support Workers based in La Loche, Pinehouse, Jans
Bay/Cole Bay, St. George's Hill/Michel Village, Stony
Rapids and Uranium City.

$50,000 (as part of Child Action Plan) to enhance mental health
services for children:

Funding to provide coordinated services to children and
youth with challenging behaviours.

$125,000 to comprehensive public health nursing services:

Enhanced prevention services such as preschool programs,
health education in the community, and prenatal programs to
be provided through a public health nursing position in each
of the communities of Beauval, Pinehouse and Buffalo Narrows.

$150,000 to strengthen northern home care services:

Funding to enable northern home care boards to provide
enhanced home care services, including nursing, to northern
residents.
