BUDGET COMMITMENT TO MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) IN REGINA

Released on March 24, 1997

Health Minister Eric Cline said today that increased funding for health
includes a commitment to provide operating funding to the Regina Health
District when it adds Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to the
specialized services it provides to the people of southern
Saskatchewan.

The Saskatoon Health District currently provides MRI services, a form
of diagnostic imaging, to the entire province. Cline said, "The
addition of MRI technology to the Regina Health District will make it
easier for people living in the southern part of the province to access
this highly specialized diagnostic service."

Commenting on the announcement, Dr. Glenn Bartlett, Regina Health
District President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "MRI provides
diagnostic information that is not available through other imaging
technologies and reduces the need for invasive diagnostic procedures.
It will also strengthen our ability to recruit and retain specialists,
especially in the neurosciences and orthopedic areas."

The Regina Health District, through the Hospitals of Regina Foundation,
is currently organizing a fund raising campaign to purchase the MRI
which will be located at the Regina General Hospital. It is expected
that the MRI will be operational in the Fall of 1998.
