ADDITIONAL $30 MILLION FOR SASKATCHEWAN HIGHWAYS

Released on March 24, 1997

Highways and Transportation Minister Andy Renaud today announced that an
additional $30 million - an 18 per cent increase - will be invested in
Saskatchewan highways in 1997-98.

"The transportation system is facing unprecedented changes. Changing
global markets, federal government policies such as cutting the Crow
Benefit, accelerated branchline abandonment and rapid elevator
consolidation are all placing increasing demands on our already
deteriorating transportation system. With this increased budget the
government is addressing these challenges facing our transportation
system," said Renaud.

The main focus for the year will be on increased highway preservation,
with approximately $17 million of the increase targeted to preservation
activities. The budget also includes an increase to the construction
program.

Road work will occur throughout the province. Investments will be
targeted to segments of the highways that are most used by businesses who
rely on the highway system.

"In the budget, the government made a 10-year, $2.5 billion commitment to
improve Saskatchewan highways. The government will build on this
commitment to improve our transportation system by releasing a
comprehensive transportation strategy later in this Session," said
Renaud.
