SOCIAL SERVICES TO FUND SUMMER INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR YOUTH

Released on June 25, 1997

Social Services Minister Lorne Calvert today announced funding for a

new summer intervention program in North Battleford.

A total of $15,130 is being provided to the Rays of Hope Student

Summer program which is a joint initiative of the Public and Catholic

school systems. The program will address issues such as nutrition,

health and well-being, self-concept and social skills.

"This is a very important program, because it assists children with

various needs to develop physically, socially and emotionally in a

positive and productive way," Calvert said. "It is programs like

these that help in building stronger families and a stronger society."

Funding is being provided through the Child Nutrition and Development

program which supports school divisions and community-based

organizations across the province, in delivering nutrition programs

for children.

The Child Nutrition and Development program has provided a total of

$1 million to programs annually, however this was increased to

$1.2 million in the 1997/98 provincial budget. An additional $500,000

in one-time funding was also targeted for prevention initiatives which

address the root causes of child and family hunger.

The program will be hosted by St. Mary Community School and McKitrick

Community School and will involve participants in community drop-in programs, cultural events and ongoing learning.

"Both of these schools have just been newly designated as

community schools," Calvert said. "I am very pleased at the work

they are already undertaking and that such an important program

is being hosted by schools such as St. Mary's and McKitrick."

The program will run from June 30 to August 8 and will address

the needs that have been identified during the school year.
