GRANTS-IN-LIEU OF PROPERTY TAXES

Released on July 25, 1997

Deputy Premier Dwain Lingenfelter announced today that the Government

of Saskatchewan is moving forward on grants-in-lieu of property taxes.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is serious about its review of

grants-in-lieu of property taxes," Lingenfelter said. "We are now

moving to the next step - compiling the assessment numbers from those

communities affected.

"We have directed our officials to prepare a proposal for phasing-in

grants-in-lieu of property taxes. This proposal will be considered as

we develop our 1998-99 provincial budget. Finances allowing, we would

like to start the phase-in for 1998."

Lingenfelter said the government is counting on municipalities and

SAMA to assist in compiling the information needed to complete the

review.

"I'm very pleased that our strong, growing economy, and the fiscal

freedom we've achieved through the hard work and sacrifice of

Saskatchewan people, allows us to finally begin to move forward on

this important issue," Lingenfelter said.
