GOVERNMENT PROVIDES FUNDING TO 12 REGINA CHILD CARE CENTRES

Released on December 10, 1997

Social Services Minister Lorne Calvert today commended child care

centres in Regina for the work they are doing to support and care for

children. The minister announced funding to 12 child care centres in

the city, to build on the good work.

Grants totalling $170,389 are being provided to assist child care

homes and centres with renovations. These renovations include:

installing windows, converting basement space into extra floor space,

expanding facilities, enhancing natural lighting and outdoor play

space, upgrading smoke alarms, installing kitchen exhaust fans,

painting, replacing carpets and flooring and purchasing and installing

dishwashers.

The 12 centres include:

the Glencairn Child Care Co-operative which will receive $25,000

to expand indoor play space, install additional windows to

enhance natural lighting, and expand outdoor play space;

the Cathedral Area Co-operative Day Care which will receive

$21,194 to convert a basement, currently used for storage, into

usable floor space for school age children and install openable

windows to improve air circulation;

the Regency Day Care Co-operative which will receive $25,000 to

expand the facility an additional 250 square feet for additional

play space;

the Community Day Care which will receive $25,000 to expand the

facility to increase indoor play space;

the Kiddie Corner Day Care which will receive $25,000 to

renovate a new building so that it meets necessary health

and fire safety standards - the day care will move into the

new building once the renovations are completed;

the YWCA Day Care Centre which will receive $25,000 to

enhance outdoor play space;

the Central Regina Early Learning Centre which will receive

$3,227 to upgrade the existing smoke alarms;

the Circle Project Child Care which will receive $6,000 for

interior renovations such as painting, replacing carpets and

repair baseboards;

the Creative Corners Co-operative Child Care which will

receive $10,000 to replace flooring throughout the centre;

the Normanview Day Care which will receive $1,000 for the

purchase and installation of a dishwasher;

the Turtle Park Co-op Child Care Centre which will receive

$2,967 for installation of a kitchen exhaust fan; and

Wise Owl School Age Care which will receive $1,000 for the

purchase and installation of a dishwasher.

"As a government we are working to ensure Saskatchewan children

grow up in healthy, safe environments," Calvert said. " I am

very pleased that we have been able to work in partnership with

these many Regina day care centres to enhance conditions in these

facilities for children."

The funding is part of the $1 million in Child Care Capital

Grants announced in the 1997/98 Budget. The Capital Grant funds

are available to child care centres for renovating and upgrading

equipment, enhancing the safety and quality of child care in

Saskatchewan.

The Child Care Capital Grants were introduced for the 1997/98

fiscal year through Saskatchewan's Action Plan for Children.

More than $24.7 million was targeted to programs for children and

families under the Action Plan.

"Our children are our future," Calvert said. "We all need to

play a role in developing a safe supporting environment. I want

to commend the boards and staff of these day cares for their

commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment for

children."
