107 PROJECTS APPROVED FOR INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS FUNDING IN SASKATCHEWAN

Released on August 25, 1997

Natural Resources Minister Ralph Goodale and Saskatchewan Municipal

Government Minister Carol Teichrob today announced that the

Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program has approved funding

for 107 municipal projects in Saskatchewan.

Speaking on behalf of Ron J. Duhamel, Secretary of State for Western

Economic Diversification and minister responsible for implementation

of the infrastructure program in Western Canada, Minister Goodale

said: "I'm pleased to see Saskatchewan communities continuing to take

advantage of Infrastructure Works funding to improve their traditional

infrastructure. High quality water and sewer systems and roadways

help communities sustain quality of life while attracting economic

growth and employment opportunities."

"Infrastructure spending is an investment in people, for prosperity

and jobs," Teichrob said. "It fosters economic growth and enhances

our competitiveness for the 21st century while strengthening

communities, creating jobs and improving the quality of life of

Saskatchewan people."

The projects, totalling $2.23 million, will be funded by the three

levels of government - federal, provincial and municipal. They

include upgrades and repairs to water treatment plants, lagoons,

roads, sidewalks, community halls and recreation facilities.

The infrastructure projects are expected to create about 37 jobs in

Saskatchewan during the planning and construction phases. In support

of this program, the province allocated its share of more than

$600,000 in the 1997/98 budget.

The original Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program, signed

in January 1994, is estimated to have created more than 5,200 short

term jobs, while at the same time making essential improvements to

infrastructure throughout the province.

Phase Two of the Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program

provides for $34 million in additional new investment in Saskatchewan

infrastructure. To date, 489 projects have been approved, totalling

$29.7 million.

Federal funding for this initiative was provided for in the February

1997 budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.

These projects underline the commitment of both governments to

establish spending priorities that will best serve the people of

Saskatchewan through the efficient use of their tax dollars.
