Sask Water Minister Eldon Lautermilch today tabled the corporation'sannual report outlining the corporation's accomplishments and
achievements during the past year.
Sask Water's net earnings rose to $2,364,000 in 1996, an increase of
$1,497,000 from 1995 results. The increase in earnings was mainly due
to an increase in Water Power Act revenues which rose by $800,000 from
1995. In years of high runoff, more water is available for hydro
electrical power generation which increases the corporation's Water
Power Act revenues.
"Hydro electrical power generation in 1996 was the highest ever
recorded and represented a 15 per cent increase over the five year
average," Lautermilch said.
A highlight for the corporation in 1996 was the completion of the
Wakaw-Humboldt Regional Water Supply system. Sask Water worked closely
with a local steering committee to complete the $32 million project
which supplies good quality water to 10,000 people in nine communities
and surrounding rural municipalities. This new water supply is
expected to lead to the expansion of industrial, commercial and
agricultural activities in the region.
Sask Water also continued to encourage water-based economic development
in 1996, helping create approximately 60 jobs in rural Saskatchewan.
"Water is one of our most precious resources and it's vital that people
understand its role in stabilizing and diversifying our economy,"
Lautermilch said. "As Saskatchewan's water manager, Sask Water is
committed to continuing to work to ensure reliable supplies of quality
water for all the people of Saskatchewan now and in the future."
