Released on September 3, 1996
The Honourable Jon Gerrard, Secretary of State for Western Economic
Diversification and Minister responsible for implementation of the
Infrastructure program in Western Canada, and Saskatchewan Municipal
Government Minister Carol Teichrob today announced the Canada-
Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Program has approved funding for 82
municipal and 39 intermunicipal projects.
"Infrastructure Works is working for Saskatchewan," Minister Gerrard
said. "It is helping create jobs and economic growth, and is improving
the quality of life for the people of the province. The water and
sewer line upgrades I announced today with Minister Goodale are good
examples of Infrastructure Works."
"These projects demonstrate the commitment of the provincial goverment,
along with the two other levels of government, to enhance the quality
of life for the residents of this province," Teichrob said. "Workers,
contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and, in particular, the people of
Saskatchewan have received numerous benefits from the infrastructure
program."
These projects are expected to create 91 jobs during the planning and
construction phases and an additional 18 long-term jobs.
The infrastructure projects have a total value of $5.38 million and
will be funded by the three levels of government - federal, provincial
and municipal.
The projects include upgrades to water and sewer lines, streets, roads,
improvements to libraries, museums and recreational facilities,
renovations to town halls and other municipal buildings, and
development of landfill waste management projects.
The Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Agreement was signed in
January, 1994. The agreement enables Canada, Saskatchewan and
municipalities to co-operatively undertake and fund projects which will
renew and improve the quality of the public infrastructure and create
employment opportunities for Canadians.
Federal funding for the Infrastructure Works Program was provided for
in the March 1996 federal budget as part of the federal government's
prioritized spending program.
To date, more than $289 million has been approved for 1,934
infrastructure projects in Saskatchewan.
