NORTH BATTLEFORD BYELECTION SET FOR NOV. 19

Released on October 21, 1996

Premier Roy Romanow today announced that a byelection for the vacant
North Battleford constituency will be held Nov. 19.

Romanow said that in keeping with a commitment made by this government,
the byelection is being held within six months of the vacancy
occurring.

"This byelection is about who will do the best work for North
Battleford," Romanow said.

"The people of this constituency are used to having a strong voice in
government. This byelection gives them a choice between strong
representation in government, or another opposition representative.

"Saskatchewan has witnessed a spectacular comeback in the past five
years. We have balanced the budget. Our economy has turned around.
We've created 10,000 new jobs. Our population has grown for 11
straight quarters. We're seeing net in-migration for the first time in
more than a decade," Romanow said.

"Our province is in a much more optimistic frame of mind than it has
been in a long time. More and more carefully, within our means, we
have the ability to work together on jobs, better education, stronger
social programs and a stable health care system that is here to stay.

"The people of North Battleford will be asked to send a strong
representative in government to speak for them, as our province works
on those priorities," Romanow said.
