PROVINCE TO NEGOTIATE TRANSFER OF FEDERAL HOUSING PROGRAMS

Released on October 2, 1996

Municipal Government Minister Carol Teichrob today announced the
provincial and federal governments have entered into negotiations for
the transfer of responsibility for social housing in Saskatchewan from
the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to the Saskatchewan
Housing Corporation.

The Government of Saskatchewan has entered into these negotiations in
response to a decision by the federal government to phase out its role
in social housing, which was announced in the 1996-97 federal budget.
Following the budget announcement the federal government proposed
transferring administration of all remaining social housing projects to
the provinces.

"Our government supports social housing and views these negotiations as
an opportunity to develop an administrative framework which is more
responsive to the needs of social housing clients," Teichrob said.
"This new administrative arrangement will give the province a greater
ability to integrate housing into the existing provincial health and
social policy framework."
