Premier Roy Romanow today spoke to a national audience on investing inour country's most valuable resource -- our people, especially our
children.
"It is the responsibility of all of us to value, protect and support
Canada's children," Romanow said while delivering a keynote address at
the closing session of the Canada's Children-Canada's Future Conference
in Ottawa. "It is the health and the strength of our children that
will determine the future health and strength of our country."
While at the conference, sponsored by the Child Welfare League of
Canada, Romanow also accepted an award for outstanding commitment to
children through Saskatchewan's Action Plan for Children.
"Our action plan is the first of its kind in the country, and provides
a model for the development of programs and services for children and
families," Romanow said.
"Since its inception, we've developed a children's council made up of
volunteers and youth to advise our government on children's issues,
expanded our Community Schools Program to involve parents in education,
and we're continuing to provide our communities with programs such as
violence intervention, alternative justice and mentoring for teen
parents."
Romanow also told conference participants of Saskatchewan's concept of
a national children's benefit, which would be similar to the children's
benefit outlined in Saskatchewan's proposals for the redesign of social
assistance.
"Should this be adopted nationally, all Canadian children, no matter
who they are or where they are from, would have the right to basic
benefits based on their family's income. This would support children
of low-income families, and effectively move all children off welfare.
"We must give our children the chance to become contributing members of
our society. We must continue to work very hard to keep families and
the future of our social safety net on the national agenda. We owe it
to our children," Romanow said.
