Health Minister Eric Cline told physicians today that evidence showshealth renewal is meeting its goals.
Speaking to representatives of the Saskatchewan Medical Association
meeting in Regina, Cline said that system-wide evidence continues to
demonstrate that health renewal is on the right track.
"The statistics show that more services are available, in more
communities than before," Cline said. "As well, more surgeries are
being performed, with fewer days in hospital and fewer re-admissions.
Community involvement is bringing services closer to people's needs,
and we can be confident that the system is financially sustainable into
the future."
Noting that the need for physician services in rural areas has been a
long-standing concern in Saskatchewan and across North America, Cline
called on physicians to work with government and others to find ways to
retain Saskatchewan medical graduates.
"This issue is not unique to Saskatchewan, but we may be able to find
unique solutions."
Cline said that the health budget contains over $1 million this year
and $1.6 million in 1997/98 to assist rural and remote physician
practices. In addition, the government has committed funds to hire a
physician recruiter to link Saskatchewan medical students with rural
communities.
The minister said other solutions may lie in new approaches by the
College of Medicine and the distribution of resources under the
discretion of the SMA.
Cline also suggested that some rural physicians might benefit from
exploring alternatives to fee-for-service payment.
"We continue to urge physicians and district health boards to explore
methods of payment which may more fairly compensate them for providing
a comprehensive range of services."
Cline said that the commitment of physicians to a constructive working
relationship has contributed to the success of health renewal.
"Only if we continue to work together co-operatively to address the
issues can we continue to improve the health system for all
Saskatchewan people."
