Released on May 10, 1996
Social Services Minister Lorne Calvert announced today that May 12-18has been proclaimed Child Care Week in Saskatchewan.
Calvert said the designation is meant to focus attention on the
importance of affordable, high-quality and reliable child care.
Calvert noted that the government's March budget allocated $500,000 to
improve wages for child care workers across the province, and for the
second year in a row, increased the subsidies for infants and toddlers
to more accurately reflect the higher cost of providing care for these
age groups.
The minister encouraged parents throughout the province to take a few
moments to express their appreciation to those who care for their
children.
"There can be, after all, few jobs more vital or worthwhile than caring
for and nurturing those who hold the future in their hands," Calvert
said.
Child Care Week was first proclaimed in Saskatchewan in 1991 as a
result of work done by the Saskatchewan Child Care Association.
