PARTNERSHIPS '96 - STUDENT EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

Released on March 4, 1996

Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training Minister Bob Mitchell
today announced Partnerships '96, a Student Summer Employment program,
which is expected to create 2,000 jobs.

Through the program, the Saskatchewan government will provide a wage
subsidy of $1.20 per hour to a maximum of $480 per job for each student
hired. Eligible employers include businesses, farms, municipal
governments and non-profit organizations. The employer must hire a
student for a minimum of 300 hours between May 1 and Sept. 30. The
program budget is $897,000.

"I am pleased to offer a program that supports both students and
employers," Mitchell said. "In fact, the program's success stems from
shared interests between employers, students and government. Employers
need the extra help during the summer, students bring fresh ideas and
enthusiasm to the workplace, and government brings the two together
with some financial support."

Eligible students include full-time, post-secondary students returning
to school in the fall of 1996, or students graduating from Grade 12
this year who intend to enrol in a post-secondary institution in the
fall.

"Partnership '96 gives students work experience during the summer and
helps them earn money to finance their continuing post-secondary
education."

Employers wanting more information should phone the Partnerships office
in Regina at (306) 787-9640 or toll-free at 1-800-597-8278.

Application forms are available from rural service centres of
Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food; Saskatchewan Education regional
offices; and Human Resource Centres of Canada (formerly Canada
Employment Centres). The deadline for employers to apply is April 15,
1996.
