LINGENFELTER TO RESCHEDULE MEETING TO DISCUSS AECL OPTIONS

Released on June 12, 1996

Due to difficulties arising from airline cancellations, Deputy Premier
and Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter was not able to
meet with Saskatchewan Members of Parliament in Ottawa today as planned
to discuss the future of Atomic Energy Canada Ltd. (AECL) and its
presence in Saskatchewan.

"I had planned on meeting with these members to discuss options the
province is pursuing for maintaining AECL in Saskatchewan,"
Lingenfelter said. "I'm now trying to reschedule this meeting before
the end of the month."

The recent federal budget reduced funding to AECL. As a result, the
corporation is considering a major restructuring of its Canadian
operations, including its office in Saskatoon. An announcement on
AECL's future plans is expected by June 30. The Saskatchewan
government provided funding for the AECL Saskatoon office in 1993.
That agreement expires at the end of this year.

"I feel it's important to meet with the Saskatchewan Members of
Parliament, and get their support to retain the jobs and benefits AECL
provides for our province," Lingenfelter said.

Lingenfelter is travelling to Quebec City for a Committee on Internal
Trade meeting.
