SASKATCHEWAN CROP INSURANCE IMPLEMENTS TOLL-FREE PHONE SERVICE

Released on July 22, 1996

Agriculture and Food Minister Eric Upshall today announced that the
Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation, (SCIC), has established a
1-888, toll-free system to provide simple and direct customer access to
crop insurance service, effective August 1.

"With the elimination of marketing agents on July 31 and the changes in
the delivery of a new crop insurance program, the toll-free numbers
will provide customers with a practical and direct method of dealing
with the corporation by having access to customer service officers,"
Upshall said.

Each of the 21 SCIC customer service offices located around the
province will have their own toll-free number. Toll-free lines will
operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voice mail service will be available
after 5 p.m. on weekdays, weekends and on holidays.

Upshall said the toll-free lines will be open for extended hours during
busy farming times for easy customer access to information or to
register a claim. Customers will be able to use these toll-free lines
throughout the year to communicate with the corporation.

"The establishment of the toll-free service is part of the evolving
process the corporation is going through as it works to develop the
most cost-effective and streamlined service for producers." Upshall
said. "Public consultations this spring, to obtain input on the
development of a new crop insurance program for 1997, revealed that
customers want a more simplified crop insurance program which can be
easily accessed. One way of doing this is through the toll-free phone
lines."

Crop insurance is a national program cost-shared by producers, the
provincial government and the federal government.
