Deputy Premier and Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter, and Great River Lakes Regional Economic Development Authority, (REDA),
Chair Bill Matlock today announced in Outlook the formation of the
province's 20th Authority.
REDAs provide a regional structure made up of municipal governments,
businesses, co-operatives and other community economic development
organizations to co-ordinate and pool their organizational,
professional and financial resources to encourage new jobs and new
investment.
The REDA initiative is based on local co-operation and regional
co-ordination, and is supported by the Federal-Provincial Partnership
Agreement on Rural Development, (PARD), Program.
"REDAs are a priority and a key component of Saskatchewan's continued
economic growth," Lingenfelter said. "One of the objectives in the
Partnership for Growth strategy is to make REDAs the focal point for
economic development in their regions."
REDA members include: the Great West Rural Development Corporation
representing the Rms of Loreburn, Rosedale, Rudy and Fertile Valley;
the villages of Broderick, Glenside, Elbow, Hawarden, Loreburn and
Macrorie; and the town of Outlook.
Another REDA member is the Mid-Lakes Community Coalition representing:
the Rms of Craik, Arm River, Willner and McCraney; the villages of
Aylesbury, Bladworth, Girvin and Kenaston; and the towns of Craik and
Davidson.
The third REDA member is the River Lake Rural Development Corporation
representing: the Rms of Enfield, Huron and Maple Bush; the villages of
Central Butte and Tugaske; and the town of Riverhurst.
"As Saskatchewan's 20th REDA, Great River Lakes represents a
significant landmark," Lingenfelter said. "With more authorities still
in the formation stages, we have achieved our target of 20 to 25 REDAs
and there is now a growing synergy of regional co-operation and
enterprise working at the local level throughout the province."
Under the Partnership for Growth strategy, the province has: made
commitments to provide cost-shared funding to REDAs; to examine
existing provincial programs for possible delivery by REDAs; and to
provide the local organizations with a package of professional and
technical expertise.
To date 19 other regional economic development authorities have been
launched in the regions surrounding Hudson Bay, Prince Albert,
Rosetown, Swift Current, Meadow Lake, Watrous, Saskatoon, Kindersley,
Humboldt, Ituna, Yorkton, Melfort, Biggar, Weyburn, Moosomin, Estevan,
Assiniboia, Melville and Moose Jaw.
