Released on January 30, 1996
Clay Serby, minister responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance,
today announced that SGI will introduce three new programs over the
next year, which will offer vehicle owners greater convenience and
flexibility when buying vehicle insurance.
"Through feedback from our customers and motor licence issuers, we know
that people want fast service and flexible payment options, and that
they will welcome the programs we're introducing today," Serby said.
The first of these service enhancements, the daily vehicle expiry
program, will replace SGI's existing end of the month vehicle
registration system effective March 1, 1996. Under the new program,
vehicle owners will receive an assigned renewal date during the month
that their plate insurance is due.
"When this program is fully operational, it will reduce month-end
lineups and lengthy waits for our clients," Serby said. "With these
three new programs and SGI's commitment to hold rates steady in 1996,
we will continue to provide efficient, convenient and affordable
service to our customers.
"The daily expiry program is the first step toward introducing
additional customer service programs such as short-term registrations
and monthly payment options, that will offer more choices and greater
convenience when registering vehicles."
SGI is currently developing a short-term vehicle registration program,
which will allow people to choose three to 11 month terms for their
vehicle insurance, rather than having to purchase insurance for a full
year. The program will appeal to owners of seasonal vehicles such as
snowmobiles, motorcycles and farm trucks. The short-term registration
program is scheduled for implementation late in 1996.
AutoPay, which will be introduced in 1997, will allow people to pay for
their vehicle registration premiums in monthly instalments. When
customers apply for AutoPay, they will pay a one-time fee, equivalent
to three months' worth of premium and registration fees. After that
initial payment, monthly instalments will be collected.
With respect to the daily vehicle expiry program, starting in February,
registered vehicle owners will receive new 1997 expiry dates on their
renewal forms based on their Personal Identification Code (PIC). For
customers applying for a new registration on or after March 1, 1996,
renewal dates will be automatically calculated one year from the day
they register their vehicle with SGI. For example, if the new
registration is issued on March 22, 1996, it will expire March 21,
1997.
Most vehicle owners will notice lower premiums in the first year
because they will not be paying for a full 365 days. For example, if
the new registration date is March 21 instead of March 31, customers
will only pay for the days the vehicle is registered, which is less
than a full year. Those with a renewal date near the end of the month
may not see a noticeable difference in their premiums.
"It's important for people to realize that the reduced amount will only
apply to the first year of the program, and that premiums will return
to the full annual amount starting next year," Serby said.
As a reminder of their daily expiry date, vehicle owners will receive a
new day sticker to place on their licence plates when they renew their
vehicle registrations.
SGI invites the public to call 1-800-667-9868 or 775-6900 in Regina
with any questions on these new programs.
