Premier Roy Romanow today announced the first session of the 23rdSaskatchewan Legislature will open Thursday, February 29th.
"We look forward to a session which will allow the government to report
back to the people of Saskatchewan on how it plans to respond to their
comments and suggestions during the recent public consultation process,
Preparing for the New Century," Romanow said.
This session begins the important work of preparing the province and
its people for the new century. Residents have told us that they want
to see the cornerstones of Saskatchewan society -- health care,
education and training and social services -- preserved and protected.
They want to see a commitment to a strong economic growth strategy for
the next four years and beyond. Finally, they want to see all of this
happen within a framework of balanced budgets, and a policy of no
personal tax increases.
"The Throne Speech will outline a very extensive legislative agenda for
the session to deal with the public's priorities of job creation,
economic growth and strong social programs. The 1996-97 provincial
budget will show how we propose to respond to these priorities, and the
challenge of federal transfer payment cuts," Romanow said.
This will mark the first legislative session since the provincial
election June 21st, 1995, which resulted in a second majority
government for Premier Romanow and his New Democratic Administration.
