TOTAL DEBT REDUCED FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1949

Released on September 27, 1995

Finance Minister Janice MacKinnon today released Volume 1 of the 1994-
95 Public Accounts which show total debt in the General Revenue Fund
going down for the first time since 1949.

"Volume 1 of the Public Accounts confirms that this Government balanced
the budget as promised in its first term of office and has begun to pay
down the Province's mortgage. I am very pleased to report that total
debt was reduced by $729 million in 1994-95, $189 million more than
estimated in the 1995-96 budget," MacKinnon said.

Volume 1 of the Public Accounts contains the Government of
Saskatchewan's main financial statements. It includes the General
Revenue Fund financial statements, as well as the Summary Financial
Statements which provide a full accounting of the financial affairs and
resources of the following:

ù the General Revenue Fund;
ù Crown corporations; and,
ù agencies, boards and commissions.

MacKinnon said that the Summary Financial Statements received a clean
opinion from the Provincial Auditor which shows that the Government's
books are accurate and reliable in every regard.

"Saskatchewan people should be very pleased with the Province's
financial statements. The hard work put into restoring the Province's
financial stability by all Saskatchewan residents is paying off and,
for the first time in a very long time, the mortgage is decreasing,"
MacKinnon concluded.
