Gordon Kirkby, MP for Prince Albert-Churchill River, on behalf ofTransport Minister Douglas Young, and Keith Goulet, MLA for Cumberland
House, on behalf of Highways and Transportation Minister Andy Renaud,
today participated in the official opening of the extended runway at
Fond du Lac Airport.
"The extension of this runway from 853 metres to 1,158 metres, together
with the installation of new lighting, will ensure that Fond du Lac
airport is capable of handling bigger aircraft and more traffic,"
Kirkby said.
The Village of Fond du Lac cannot be reached by road and relies on
barge service from Fort McMurray, Alberta, for supplies. Perishable
goods and mail, however, are delivered by air.
"The runway extension will benefit Fond du Lac's 750 residents, the
Prince Albert Grand Council, northern air carriers, tourist outfitters,
mining and exploration companies, and provincial and federal government
agencies," Goulet said.
The federal contribution to this project came from the
Local/Local-Commercial Airports Assistance Program, which ended this
year. Under the new Airports Capital Assistance Program, airports with
scheduled traffic will be eligible to apply for assistance to fund
airport safety-related projects such as runways and taxiways.
The Government of Saskatchewan, which owns and operates the airport,
contributed $100,000 toward the runway extension.
Federal funding of $450,000 for this project was provided for in the
federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal
framework. "This initiative is an example of how the federal
government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve
Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars," Kirkby said.
