'95 HARVEST ALMOST COMPLETED

Released on October 4, 1995

Ideal harvest weather allowed farmers across most of the Saskatchewan
grainbelt to make significant progress with harvest operations during
the past week. As a result, 95 per cent of the 1995 Saskatchewan crop
has been harvested, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food's
weekly crop report.

This is up from 78 per cent last week. On average at this time of
year, 87 per cent of the crop has been combined.

The spring wheat harvest is 96 per cent complete across the
Saskatchewan grainbelt and estimates indicate an above-average quality
crop for the province. Fifty-five per cent of the spring wheat crop is
expected to grade No. 1 Canada Western (CW), 31 per cent 2 (CW), 13 per
cent 3 (CW) and 1 per cent Canada Feed. The 10-year average (1985-94)
for spring wheat crops in Saskatchewan is 44 per cent 1 (CW), 24 per
cent 2 (CW), 21 per cent 3 (CW) and 11 per cent Canada Feed.

Most of the crop remaining to be harvested is located in the southeast
area of the province. Field operations and crop development have been
delayed by cool, wet weather which has been experienced throughout the
growing season, including harvest. Over 10 per cent of the crop
remains to be harvested in these districts. It is anticipated that a
week of warm, dry weather would allow for completion of the 1995
harvest.

Farmers are beginning fall field work and are looking for rain to
replenish moisture reserves, particularly in central and northern
areas.
