Deputy Premier Ed Tchorzewski said today the Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce (CIBC) decision to locate a telephone banking centre in
Saskatchewan is a solid indication of the positive business climate in
the province. The telephone banking centre, which will open in Regina
in the spring of 1996, will provide the equivalent of 500 full-time
jobs.
"CIBC made its decision based on clear criteria; excellence in
technology, a quality labour force, reasonable operating costs, and a
proven track record in call centre operations," Tchorzewski said.
"Through an aggressive teamwork approach we demonstrated that
Saskatchewan excelled in these areas and we look forward to a
continuing partnership to ensure a successful beginning for the new
centre."
Tchorzewski said that a significant marketing effort to demonstrate the
merits of locating in Saskatchewan was made by a provincial team that
included representatives from SaskTel and Economic Development.
"SaskTel has a proven track record, highly-competitive rates, and
world-class expertise in call-centre technology, along with an
infrastructure that is the result of long-term strategic investment,"
Tchorzewski said. "Being the first province to have sustainable
balanced budgets we also have a stable fiscal situation, an effective
dialogue between business and government, and some of Canada's most
effective training programs."
Tchorzewski said that as part of the government's commitment to
training, the province will develop a recruitment and training capacity
to ensure that Saskatchewan workers have the specific skills required
to take job opportunities in the growing call centre industry.
