Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter said today that earlyindications are positive that the 1995 Grey Cup will be very successful
and that none of the provincial government's agreed upon $1.8 million
loan guarantee will be called upon by the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Lingenfelter made the statement following Cabinet's formal approval of
the $1.82 million guarantee which was promised the CFL as part of
Saskatchewan's Grey Cup bid.
Roughrider season ticket sales have increased to about 18,000 with over
90 per cent of season ticket holders purchasing Grey Cup tickets. With
successful sales campaigns to date and recent opening of sales to the
general public, the stadium is on the verge of being sold out.
The event budget projects revenue from ticket sales and sponsorships of
more than $6.0 million based on over 50,000 seats. Expenses are in line
with the event budget, which means expectations are for the projected
surplus from the Grey Cup to be exceeded.
"Given the success of sales to date, we are hopeful that the provincial
government guarantee that was instrumnental in bringing the Grey Cup to
Saskatchewan will not have to be called upon," Lingenfelter said.
"Provincial and local tourism organizations have projected millions of
dollars in spinoff benefits to Saskatchewan communities as a result of
the Grey Cup festival," Lingenfelter said.
Lingenfelter congratulated the many volunteers and corporate sponsors,
and said it is only fitting the province support their exceptional
efforts by backstopping this unique opportunity to gain international
exposure for Saskatchewan.
