Released on July 18, 1995
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Minister Ralph Goodale and DeputyPremier Ed Tchorzewski today announced that the Canada-Saskatchewan
Infrastructure Works Program has approved funding for 84 municipal and 30
intermunicipal projects.
These projects are expected to create 72 jobs over the next two years
during the planning and construction phases, and an additional 14 long-
term jobs as new facilities become operational. The infrastructure
projects have a total value of $4,315,416 and will be funded by the three
levels of government -- federal, provincial, and municipal.
The projects include street and sidewalk construction and upgrading,
water and sewer system upgrading, renovations and improvements to town
halls and other municipal buildings, development and improvement of
recreational facilities and community centres, and landfill and waste
management projects.
Speaking on behalf of Lloyd Axworthy, Minister of Western Economic
Diversification and implementing minister of the infrastructure program
in Western Canada, Goodale said: "In Saskatchewan the infrastructure
program has enhanced opportunities for economic growth and increased
employment through traditional infrastructure projects like those
announced today. The flexibility of the program has allowed Canadians to
define how their communities will look in the future."
"These projects are creating jobs, contributing to the quality of
community life, and making it possible for local governments to make
needed improvements to municipal infrastructure," Tchorzewski said. "In
addition, all this activity is good for local business and Saskatchewan's
economy."
The Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Agreement was signed in
January, 1994. It enables Canada, Saskatchewan, and municipalities to
co-operatively undertake and fund projects which will renew and improve
the quality of the public infrastructure and create employment
opportunities for Canadians.
To date, almost $209 million has been approved for 892 infrastructure
projects in the province.
Federal funding for the Infrastructure Works Program was provided for in
the February budget as part of the federal government's prioritized
spending program.
