Premier Roy Romanow said today that job creation and economicdevelopment will be the government's number one priority in the coming
legislative session.
Romanow was addressing the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce.
"Our government is determined to tackle this issue, both in our Speech
from the Throne and in our budget, with as much determination as we
have tackled the deficit over the last three years," Romanow said.
"While we've had some encouraging news in the job-creation area, more
needs to be done.
"I believe the economic turnaround will continue into 1995, especially
if we can put into place the appropriate taxation policies and
legislative initiatives to encourage Saskatchewan business to grow and
new business to come to the province."
Romanow said today's announcement of a bio-fermentation plant in
Saskatoon will help new biotechnology firms by reducing start-up and
overhead costs in this strategic economic development sector.
"What we will continue to do with next month's budget, as we've been
doing with every budget, fiscal capacity permitting, is to focus job
creation in growth areas of our economy such as agricultural
biotechnology and information technology.
"Whether it's the industries of the future or the more traditional
sectors of our economy, training a skilled workforce is the key to
growth. I can tell you our budget will support even stronger job
creation and more training opportunities for young people.
"The employment figures are beginning to catch up with our overall
economic recovery, with 12,000 more people working in December, 1994,
compared to 1993. What's really exciting is that today, we are in an
excellent position to build on this positive trend."
