Health Minister Louise Simard today announced that Provincial WellnessGrants have been approved for 11 non-profit organizations in
Saskatchewan.
The grants, of up to $10,000, are for projects which have a provincial
focus and help promote good health, disease and injury prevention, and
healthful public policies.
"The government is working toward a better health system which puts
greater emphasis on personal wellness," Simard said. "These projects,
designed to help promote healthy lifestyles, are entirely consistent
with that goal."
Grants have been approved for the following groups and projects:
ù Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, $10,000 for a
study to help farm families improve safety and reduce injuries and
deaths from farming accidents;
ù Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, $10,000 for "Reclaiming
My Life", a video to help stroke survivors rebuild their lives;
ù Kikinahk Friendship Centre, La Ronge, $10,000 for a conference on
race relations planned for the spring of 1995;
ù Saskatchewan Palliative Care Association, $10,000 for a series of
workshops for rural residents on caring for the terminally ill;
ù Wilkie School Division, $10,000 for a course developed by two local
teachers to promote environmental awareness in middle-year
Saskatchewan students;
ù Saskatchewan Physical Education Association, $1,250 for a study on
the impact of a Quality Daily Physical Education Program in an
elementary school setting;
ù Saskatchewan Association for Community Living, $2,500 for a booklet
for health providers promoting a new philosophy of caring for the
mentally handicapped;
ù Parkland Regional Recreation Association, Yorkton, $3,500 for a
campaign to inform residents of the benefits of an active and
healthy lifestyle;
ù CUSO Saskatchewan, $3,150 for a workshop on dental health promotion;
ù Zone 8 Sports Council, Prince Albert, $1,500 for a coaches'
development program;
ù Service Fransaskois d'Education des Adultes, Gravelbourg, $1,000 for
a Wellness Fair focusing on nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices.
"I wish to congratulate all these groups for their efforts to help
Saskatchewan people get healthy and stay healthy," Simard said.
The next deadline is Feb. 15 for Provincial Wellness Grant
applications. A total of $294,000 was allocated for the grants in the
1994-95 budget year. Groups receiving grants are required to match
them with either cash, donated goods or services.
